Dr. Karl Landsteiner’s work helps to determine blood groups and thus opened a way for blood transfusions which can be carried out safely. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1930 for this discovery. A blood type is a classification of blood based on the presence and absence of antibodies and also based on the presence or absence of inherited antigenic substances on the surface of red blood cells. These antigens may be proteins, carbohydrates, glyco-proteins, or glycolipids, depending on the blood group system.
